Admitted as a Solicitor in Hong Kong in 2000, Derek spent 21 years in that common law jurisdiction specialising as a criminal defence practitioner. He represented clients in all aspects of the criminal justice system from arrest to final appeal, working on all types of cases; from those involving large-scale complex commercial crime through to violence/domestic violence to drugs-related offences and everyday summary offences.

He also carved a niche as a successful trial advocate and worked for Hong Kong’s premier criminal law firm, spending 12 years as a partner. His professionalism was recognised when he was listed in Doyle’s Guide as a Leading Criminal Defence Lawyer Hong Kong in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and as a Recommended White Collar Crime, Corporate Crime & Regulatory Investigations Lawyer Hong Kong in 2020 and 2021.

Fluent in English, French and Cantonese, Derek moved to Brisbane in 2021 and after completing transitional studies at both QUT and Bond University, he was admitted as a Legal Practitioner in Queensland in 2022. After initially working at a practice on the Gold Coast, Derek joined our team and he brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned specialist and a highly effective communicator with the ability to quickly establish a working rapport with his clients. He has already appeared in most courthouses across South-East Queensland and has worked with some of the leading barristers in the District and Supreme Courts respectively.
