Weapons offences include the unlawful possession of ‘weapons’ as defined by law, including certain types of knives and firearms. Ignorance of the law is no excuse and the courts will often see people who have purchased weapons, wrongfully believing that they were lawful to purchase and possess, being charged with weapons offences. Unless an offender knew how to research and navigate the law they might never know that it was in fact unlawful to possess such an item.
A very dangerous area of weapons offences involve the mandatory imposition of actual terms of imprisonment for certain offences, even for people who have no prior criminal history. Therefore, extreme caution must be exercised in this area to ensure that all options are explored before pleas of guilty are entered.
